The Spirit of a Finisher

In life, there are many things we wish to finish but for many reasons never actually do so. We wish to finish the shed, but it ends up a pile of bricks, we wish to finish spanish lessons but it ends up as a stack of dusty books, we wish to travel the world and settle for magazine cut outs, we wish to learn tennis but it ends up as a rusty racket.

Many people in life start projects gloriously but few make it to the end.  The reason for this could possibly be that we have not made preparation for the obstacles that we are bound to face down the line. 2 Timothy 4:7 says “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”. The 3 key points to note are 1)Fight; 2)Finish; 3) Faith.

1) Fight

In order to finish properly we must be ready fight. Perhaps one of the reasons we tend not to finish is that we fight over trivial issues so when the major issues come along, we have no strength left. This therefore means that we must learn to pick our battles and identify what is worth fighting for and what is best left alone. When we fight, we must fight a good fight. The devil only knows how to fight dirty, so he’ll hit us at our lowest points in weak spots. We stoop down to his level by fighting his accusations with anger, by fighting his lies with rage, by fighting his backbiting with malice… We fight a good fight when for his lies we respond with peace, for his accusations, we respond in love and for his backbiting we respond in gentleness. To finish we have to fight; the enemy is not pleased with finishers, he realises that there is power in finishing so he throws fiery darts to prevent us from finishing our course….
